‘This is a Call of God … or is it?’: Narratives about Humans, God and Eschatology in the Dutch Reformed Pietist Community during the COVID-19 Outbreak

Abstract In this study, we examine which narratives were put forward by key figures of the Dutch reformed pietist community during COVID -19 pandemic. We analyse sermons and news articles from period March–November 2020. find, as expected, a dominant narrative God’s judgment, calling to repentance an event emphasizes need for prayer. Although pandemic was seen call God, systematic origin virus (God/Satan/natural phenomena) remained rather ambiguous. More often it stated that ‘everything falls under His providence’. The earthly mostly unaddressed, well eschatological interpretations, contrary our expectations. conclude main is general message repentance, than concrete theological application dynamic virus, its origins subsequent spread. some cases, ‘jargon’ even used tool just further accentuate tendencies theology.
